The Handbook: Building a Worldview Around Consent.

Today I want to talk about one of the biggest shifts I had to process in my thinking after my deconversion. Not to make it sound all dramatic or anything, but it was about the biggest 180 I could possibly have made, and chances are some of y’all are facing that same challenge now. Continue reading

A Particularly Ugly Episode in the Christian Culture Wars.

It’s been a rather mind-blowing week over in Christian Bizarro-land. The anniversary of the landmark decision Roe v. Wade was coming up, and it happened to coincide with the start of a legislative session in Congress, so naturally there’s been quite a lot of grandstanding and showboating going on as Christianist politicians and religious leaders alike jockey to demonstrate who loves fetuses the most. Continue reading

The Handbook: Soaking in a Bubble Bath.

We’ve talked here about the “Christian bubble.” The Christian bubble is an insular world with its own customs, language, in-jokes, references, worldview, attitudes, and social customs–a world that only very minimally touches upon the real world that non-Christians inhabit. Today I want to devote more time to the idea. Continue reading

And I Still Belong To Me.

A new friend of mine wrote a blog post at Ex-Communications about Christianity’s massive blind spot about consent–and all Hell broke loose about one line in it. Continue reading

Persecution Complexity.

Hi! I hope your weekend’s going well so far. Today I want to talk about the Christian persecution complex. Over a year ago, we talked here about the demonstrably false idea that a lot of American Christians have that they … Continue reading

An Unfractured Fairy Tale About Listening.

Today’s story is about a space princess and the person who listened to her, and what happened afterward. Not too long ago, I wrote a piece calling attention to a group called Quiet Christians. The gentleman running it will be … Continue reading

Taking the Religion Out of the Ex-Christian.

You can take the person out of religion, but it’s sometimes much harder to get the religious tendencies out of the person. Some time ago, about five years after I’d left Christianity, I was reading online about some new anti-pornography … Continue reading

What Pearl-Clutching Doesn’t “Just” Do.

It’s been a really bad week to be a moralistic, paternalistic, patriarchal, slut-shaming, ignorance-glorifying Christian. We’ll talk about Mary Sues tomorrow, but I wanted to mention this while it’s on my mind, these two news pieces that I recently saw: … Continue reading

Disproportional Threats (Are So Very Christian).

Insufferable misogynist Ross Douthat is wringing his hands over sex and no-fault divorce again. If women aren’t properly terrified of the “consequences” of sex and properly reined in to marriages they can’t easily escape, then the world will end. Pat … Continue reading

Scary, Scary Words.

Many years ago, I was in a Bible study with a bunch of older married women one rainy, dark weeknight. Or rather, I was running late to a Bible study. I still don’t know what possessed me to get into … Continue reading
